Cannot Open Tunnel Error
Got a tunnel error message, while using a program on your BlackBerry?
Or, for some reason your program cannot connect?
The reason is, you need to have the TCP settings set. You have to set it one time, and save it. Then, thats it. Whatever program you later use, or download it should work. Some instant messaging programs once downloaded on the BlackBerry device will fail to connect. Why? There is no TCP settings set.
Tell you what? With this setting, you can also use your BlackBerry as a modem!
Yes, all what you have to do is plug your BlackBerry to the USB, and with the correct dial-up settings you could connect to the Internet. I will post HOW TO tutorial for this. But now, lets work on getting the TCP settings.
Note: This will only work for the Etisalat BlackBerry service.
Goto the Options menu, and select Advanced Options:

Then select TCP:

Then enter these settings:
APN: mnet
Username for APN: mnet
Password for APN: mnet

Thats it. Enjoy!

Hi Abdulla …
I was just surfing around whem I came across your site. First I would like to thank you for all the effort which you are putting in this site. The amount of info is great and the fact that you keep your site up to date is higly appreciated.
Now, any updates regarding the promised tutorial. If there is a way to connect my laptop to access the internet through BIS will be a major selling point for me. The thing is I am always on the move and in need of internet to access defferent systems. How about the speed? I have heard many compaint about it being too slow??!!

Hello H Z.
I will post a tutorial on how to connect a computer to a BlackBerry device probably by this coming weekend, if not soon.
Regarding the speed, whenever I connect my BlackBerry device to my laptop, the speed is more or less equivalent to a dial-up connection.
If you would like me to notify you when this tutorial is out, just send over your email address.

quick q?
based on your experience … can the 8100 and the 8300 work as a modem with etisalat?
Abdulla said,
September 7, 2007 at 1:34 pm
H Z:
Indeed. Both the 8100 and 8300 will work as a modem with Etisalat. I have been using my 8100 as a modem, and currently my 8300 works too.
H Z said,

So between those two … which one would you recommend? I want to take the advantage of Etisalat’s offer during GITEX.
Abdulla said,

H Z:
The Pearl 8100, and Curve 8300 are two devices available through Etisalat along with 8800, and 8700.
If size does not matter much, I would recommend either the 8800, or the Curve.
The Curve has a 2MP camera, and the 8800 has GPS.
You could decide which among these, after you have a firm look at both smartphones in real.

Dear Abdulla…
Thank you for the fast reply… I will do as you said and check out both devices during my vsit to GITEX.
thanx again.

Hi Abdulla,
What is the dial up string for connecting internet thru blackberry. Is it the default *99# or something different. Is there any extra initializing strings to be added into the modem.

Hello SAN.
I am currently writing a step-by-step tutorial which will be ready in less than 24 hours on how to use a BlackBerry phone as a modem.

This tutorial is a basic rough one. There are plenty of reasons why the connetion can fail. The tutorial helps giving you the basic steps needed to setup a computer connection with a BlackBerry phone. It is up to the reader to figure out how. I can provide assistance, but the person with the computer can always figure out how to properly solve the issue.
Regarding the APN, usually APN setup is not needed for the Internet access on a BlackBerry device. You can browse the Internet just fine without it. But, there are certain programs, and Internet browsers that need the APN inorder to work. A good example is Opera.
If there is any particular error that you get, I will be happy to assist you if you can tell me what error message you are getting.

When i do the dail up it says port open then dial *99# and immediately gives the error message The modem Hardware failure even deleted the modem and recreated the same. But still gives the same error that why i tried to do the modem query and got lots of strings with COMMAND NOT SUPPORTED , is it required to be OK string in order to work.

Hi Abdullah,
Many thanks for such wonderful site. Keep ‘em coming.
I have a question regarding the Opera Mini, and how you could make it running. I configured the TCP the way you explained, but it remained not working.
Please advise.
My pin# is 251c6063
Abdulla said,

Hello Naji,
Make sure that you have the latest Opera Mini. I would recommend that you download Opera Mini 4 Beta 2 from http://www.operamini.com/beta/
Once Opera Mini is installed, make sure that you have your APN setup the way this tutorial shows, run Opera Mini, and grant access to your phone resources.
Opera Mini will attempt to run a connection search, let it finish, and if everything is good, you will be able to surf the Internet using Opera Mini.

My mistake I appologize, and will update the tutorial: http://www.blackberryuae.net/?p=269
Try choosing: Standard 33600 bps Modem rather than the Standard 56000 bps Modem.
This should work.

Hi,
i got quickIM on my blackberry 8700g, it keeps on giving me the following error:
network error:Intresnohttp
help:www.quickim.com/err
java.io.IOException:
responsecode=400
i ve set the apn and username and password under tcp, but still same problem, i called etisalat on 101, they told me tht they dont know anything about TCP >.>; and they told me if its about APN its blackberry.net same thing for the user and pass, but i ll be charged 0.02/kb if i do tht, now idk if i should do tht or not, and i already purchased the software for 29.99$, so basicly its a waste of money if thats the issue.
Abdulla said,
September 15, 2007 at 1:32 am
Amr:
Hello. I am not a quickIM user, as I recommend IM+ as an instant messenger program, but you should check out: http://www.quickim.com/err/ as it might help you solve the problem.
Amr said,
September 15, 2007 at 1:45 am
i did, it says need 2 set the TCP settings, but if its charged then i wont do it, cuz its the company’s blackberry and i ll b using it alot, and its not mnet, its blackberry.net now appearently
Abdulla said,
September 15, 2007 at 4:04 am
Amr:
I modified my APN settings to blackberry.net, and it did not work.
Besides, as you pointed out, what good is the application if you are going to be charged for data use? Let it be whether it worked with mnet or blackberry.net.
Thus, I would recommend the following: http://www.blackberryuae.net/?p=30 or http://www.blackberryuae.net/?p=58
Download the trial versions, and check whether they will work first, before purchasing any.
Frankly, I bought IM+ and its very good.

its not the software that charges u, its the etisalat tht will be charging if we use apps tht require the TCP settings
Abdulla said,
September 18, 2007 at 1:53 pm
Amro:
That’s true, Etisalat will charge you, because you are using a software that uses TCP connection rather than the BES/BIS to connect.
Thus, its better to get an instant messengar that doesn’t use TCP for connecting.

Hi Guys,
Firstly thanks to Abdulla for the great site - very useful. I wish I found you earlier though as I have struggled through a few issues myself!
I also contacted Etisalat about the APN configuration and after some umming and errring they sent me this info to configure on the APN:
APN: blackberry.net
Username/Password: “N/A”
IP/Ports: 206.51.26.193:19999:19998
This info is also on the support.emsmobile.com site.
I also cannot get the above to work whereas mnet does work. I am also concious about the charges, but I think it is worth it for what I am trying to do.
Regards, Tariq.
