Tutorial: Etisalat BlackBerry as Modem

As promised, and long awaited; here is a Step-by-Step tutorial to configure and connect your BlackBerry device to your computer for Internet use.
Important: You have to connect your BlackBerry by USB connection to the computer, and make sure that BlackBerry Desktop Manager is running.
1. Click Start > Control Panel > Phone and Modem Options

2. At the Phone and Modem Options window, click on the Modems tab and Click Add

3. Make sure to select the option “Don’t Detect my modem; I will select it from a list“, and then click Add

4. For the Manufacturer select “(Standard Modem Types)” and for the Models select “Standard 33600 bps Modem”

5. Select the BlackBerry port, which at my computer is “COM20” then click Next

6. Windows will add the modem, and if successful the following message will be shown:

7. Click Finish
8. At the Phone and Modem Options window under Modems tab, select “Standard 33600 bps Modem” and then click Properties

9. Click on the Advanced tab and at the Extra Settings add the following: +cgdcont=1,”IP”,”mnet”, then click OK

10. mnet is the APN for Etisalat, if you are on another network, make sure that you know your APN name to type here
11. At the Phone and Modem Options window, click OK
12. Goto Start > Control Panel > Network Connections

13. Click on Create a new connection

14. New Connection Wizard will start:

15. Select Connect to the Internet then click Next

16. Select Set up my connection manually then click Next

17. Select Connect using a dial-up modem then click Next

18. Select the Standard 33600 bps Modem then click Next

19. Type the ISP name; here I used “BlackBerry” then click Next

20. Enter the phone number “*99#” then click Next

21. At the User name box, type “mnet” then click Next

22. The New Connection Wizard will end, and make sure to select the “Add a shortcut to this connection to my desktop” then click Finish

23. Click Dial and ENJOY!

I’m getting the error 718 while Verifying user name and password
Abdulla said,
September 16, 2007 at 2:36 am
Rami:
Make sure you keep the password field empty. If you enter a password the connection may not be established.
Another solution is, to use mnet as a password, but I would recommend that you try dialing without a password first.
Rami said,
September 17, 2007 at 8:11 am
Dear Abdulla
No password was provided, and to make sure I deleted the connection, removed the modem and re installed everything again.
The same timeout error occurred, error 718.
Fyi my BB is 8300 curve. Does it make any difference?
The modem port is com4.
Rami said,
September 17, 2007 at 8:14 am
FYI, I’m getting got “Verifying username and password”. It is showing for some time (timeout period) then it is giving the error.
As if it is not getting a respond from the server.

Rami:
Are you using the correct 33600 bps Modem? If so, try dialing without a username and password.
If this didn’t work, try disabling IP header Compression: Goto your connection > Click Properties > Goto Networking tab > Select Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) and click Properties > Click Advanced > Under PPP link, unselect “Use IP header compression”
My BlackBerry is a Curve 8300 too, and thus it doesn’t make a difference at all.

nibu:
Make sure you enter the correct username, with no password, or use the same username as a password.
If this didn’t work, try the following:
1. Goto your connection > Click Properties > Goto Networking tab > Select Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) and click Properties > Click Advanced > Under PPP link, unselect “Use IP header compression”
2. Goto your connection > Click Properties > Goto Security tab > Under Security options, click “Allow unsecured password” in the “Validate my identity as follows” box
3. Goto your connection > Click Properties > Goto Options tab > Under Dialing options, unselect “Include Windows logon domain”
The charges are: 1 Fils for every 1 Kilobytes.

mahmoud:
Yes, you have to pay even though you have an unlimited data plan on your BlackBerry.
This is where things start to be technical and its so hard to explain on how to figure out what port is your BlackBerry device connected to a computer.
If you would like, you can mail me, and we will setup a meeting to help you connect your BlackBerry device to a computer.
No. You should buy IM+. It is highly recommended that you do.
Error 692, is usually due to a modem malfunction, serial cable not correctly wired or connected to an open port, or modem driver is not correctly installed.
Thus, as previously said, mail me, and I will help you setup up your connection.
Abdulla said,
October 5, 2007 at 3:03 pm
ahmed:
It is working, but I cannot go into techincal details on how to exactly setup the connection. Different computers have different configurations.
Thus, if you are interested, you can mail me, and I will be more than happy to meet with you, and help you setup your connection.

langawi:
Welcome.
You can use another phone as long as it supports BlackBerry. A good example are Nokia phones where they use BlackBerry Connect software.
I am not sure whether the Sony VAIO UX has BlackBerry support, but you can always check with their support center.

dear Abdulla,
i recently bought an iPhone. could you please help me set up internet using my blackberry account ?
I need help with the APN, Username and Password.
also if you know that if the standard data plan would apply (i was reading one of the posts above where you advised someone that if the blackberry is connected to the computer then it would be 1 fill / kb.
i have heard that there is a way use the unlimited data plan offered by blackberry on the iPhone.
any help would be highly appreciated.
thanks you in advance
Manan
Abdulla said,
October 12, 2007 at 1:53 pm
Hello Manan,
If you are planning to use your BlackBerry data plan on iPhone, then you have to wait, and probably you will wait alot!
Reason?
iPhone does not support BlackBerry, at least not yet.
BlackBerry introduced BlackBerry Connect, which is basically a software that you get to install on non-BlackBerry devices to have BlackBerry data support. They currently support Nokia, Sony Ericsson, Palm, Motorola, Samsung, and HTC devices; http://na.blackberry.com/eng/devices/enabled/
This is as far as my knowledge takes me with iPhone; I don’t own one yet, neither do I have any experience with it.
Mnet is your solution to have Internet access on your iPhone. Mnet is a GPRS service provided by Etisalat. But then, you have to pay 1 Fils for every 1 Kb of data.
For BlackBerry APN setup: http://www.blackberryuae.net/?p=22
If you did figure out a way to have iPhone access BlackBerry unlimited data plan, please let me know, thankfully.
You are always welcome.

Can i use internet in my laptop using bluetooth options both my laptop & Blackberry 8300?
Abdulla said,

Mazadul:
Yes. If you correctly setup the Bluetooth connection between your laptop and your BlackBerry device as a modem, pairing will allow you to have Internet access.

Hi Abdulla
Tried a lot, but not able to connect with my laptop.
First i dont get port 20.
i got port 6 activated and connected.
But it shows Erroe633: The modem (or other connecting device) is already in use or is not configured properly.
I have BB 8300
what would have gone wrong.
How to determine which port i have to connect through.
Abdulla said,
November 16, 2007 at 7:20 pm
Hello laxmikant,
Thats a common problem. To determine the port, requires more technical knowledge that I cannot elaborate more here.
If you would like, we can schedule a meeting and I will be more than happy to assist you with the connection.

Hi Abdullah
First of all thanks to such a nice tutorial. I am a new user of BlackBerry and want to know that if we are using BlackBerry as a modem for laptop and browsing/downloading from laptop what is charge/Kb or overall?
Shoaib Raza said,
November 26, 2007 at 8:25 pm
Hi Abdullah
My second question is what is download speed kb/sec of BlackBerry? Either connection speed equal to 56kbps or more?
Abdulla said,
November 27, 2007 at 10:42 pm
Shoaib Raza:
Yes, it is charged: 1 Fils for every 1 Kb.
The speed is equivalent to a dial-up connection more or less.
Muzammil said,
December 1, 2007 at 10:13 pm
Why should we be charged for it - is it required to use the mnet APN? Can we not use the “blackberry.net” APN, which offers flat charges (included in the plan provided by Etisalat)?
Kindly reply soon.
